Worried about virus?

09-12-03

Why should you always do your updates?

I was doing some reading today on the slammer and blaster worms.  The amazing thing about both these worms is how devilishly fast they are at infecting new machines.  Do you know that within 13 minutes of it's release Slammer had probed and infected every vulnerable machine on the internet that was turned on?  Because they don't rely on the relatively slow speed of an email gateway, and people's complicity in opening emails to spread  - these worms travel much faster than any virus software can reasonably be expected to respond.  Furthermore, they frequently begin running immediately upon infection, and because the infection and scanning rate is so high, terminating the process doesn't last long - the machine is reinfected within minutes if it's still attached to the internet.

This is why we emphasize that the only way to prevent the spread of such worms is to keep your machine patched to date and to employ adequate firewall security for your system.  So if you are waiting for the worm before you bother with a firewall or patching your PC, wait no longer - you NEED to have that box patched now.  If the critical updates world is in your system tray - it's time to accept and reboot :)
