FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Wishing You all a very Happy and Successful New Year with all your Personal and Rotary dreams coming true.Once again although I realize that it is still very early, I would appreciate word from those who think they may attend, as this will help us in our planning. Note that this is not a commitment, just an indication of interest. That’s it for now, but please stay tuned for further details as they develop. You can make your room reservations now at the Holiday Inn in Ithaca by logging on to www.holiday-inn.com/ithacany and be sure to use the booking code IFR.

Dave Flinn

I have now been to 10 ICUFR Conferences, and I will tell you from personal experience that they changed my life and my outlook on ICUFR and on ROTARY. I made friends around the world who I not only learned to Love as Family, but who taught me so much more about the true Internationality of Rotary and what we are capable of. IF at all possible you will be rewarded greatly by joining us in Ithaca.

Rotary History Project Needs District History

John Selway, who founded the Rotary History Project, in late 2000, continues to collect Rotary history, with a team of historians and volunteers at www.rotaryfirst100.org This continuing project represents the "First 100 Years" of our history. The are seeking additional material from you.

He and his team are looking for histories of districts. www.districthistory.org is where you can see the present districts they have recorded. If yours is not among them, then use their contact form to find out how you can assist them. Also, they are collecting histories of the first clubs of each present and former Rotary country. At www.rotaryfirst100.org/global/countries you'll find a complete list of all countries and first clubs. Those without "links" are those for whom they have no history. Again, if you can help them, use their "comment" form. In addition, RotaryFirst100.org has just begun a project to link all regional histories. www.regionalhistory.org These are the stories of "How Rotary Began" in each regional of the world. Look at the map on this main page, and if your area is not listed, then get in touch with their historians, through the website's comment form.

This project, now in its sixth year, is designed to bring about a renewed understanding of the values, wisdom, and heritage of Rotary's past to create a better future for Rotary's mission of world peace and understanding.

At their website, you can also sign up for a monthly newsletter which will keep you up to date on what's been recently posted. In addition the website features a single page, excellent for posting on a club or district website. www.onepagehistory.info is the location. There are over 1,400 pages of researched history with several thousand articles. The historians welcome you to enjoy this free and open resource. They also have the world's largest collection of the writings of Rotary founder Paul P. Harris (on the internet) at www.whatpaulharriswrote.org

Tech Tips:

The Top Fourteen Telltale Signs of Spyware, Adware, and/or Underware Windows - all versions

When you start your computer, or when your computer has been idle for a long time, your Internet browser opens to display Web site advertisements.

When you use your browser to view Web sites, other instances of your browser open to display Web site advertisements.

Your Web browser's home page unexpectedly changes or you can't change it to another home page.

Web pages are added to your Favorites folder and you don't know how they got there.

Toolbars are added to your Web browser and you've never seen them before.

A program or programs may not start normally.

When you click a link in a program, the link does not work.

Your Web browser suddenly closes or freezes up

It takes a very long time to start up your computer

Outlook Express may not work like it once did. Other programs may no longer work or suddenly stop working without explanation

You can't change your default search engine or your search results seem to be mostly advertisements disguised as relevant results.

You receive "special offers" from sites you've never visited. You notice a huge increase in spam.

The people you send email too complain about advertisements in the email you send them.

When you go to download a program and you are told you must install other programs just to get the one you wanted.

Tech Tips - The Four Pillars of Internet Security - PLUS Identity Theft coverage

DISCLAIMER: What I am about to describe is a new program that I now use, and IS NOT endorsed or provided by or from ICUFR. I don't think it is available anywhere other for the USA and maybe Canada, so if you don't live here you can stop reading now. (Carl P Cardey)

One must never forget the greatly increasing risks of using a computer on the internet, and the FOUR things you must keep constantly updated if you are to avoid intrusions by viruses, malware, recording of all your keystrokes to see where you go, looking for your Passwords, Credit Card Numbers, getting a lot of new incoming spam and advertising,....... You need all of these services working for you. . Firewall protection . Antivirus . Antispyware . Patching

BUT now, very fast rising is IDENTITY THEFT, which can come from holes in your above computer programs. You can go to the US Government Federal Trade Commission website at http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/ to find official information on IT. They provide information about how to recover if your identity is stolen, and One bit of info from their site is:

Identity theft is a serious crime. How does it happen? Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. While you can't entirely control whether you will become a victim, there are steps you can take to minimize your risk.

One missing puzzle piece can dramatically change a puzzle's characteristics. The same is true with a person's identity - one bit of personal information is all someone needs to steal your identity. This website provides detailed information to help protect yourself, and the steps to take if identity theft occurs.

IF you have any programs that keep your finances in the computer, your passwords , your credit card numbers, you should have extraordinary security protection working , every second you are online. The internet criminals are becoming VERY sophisticated.

I began using a security program from Invisus, which you can check at http://www.invisus.com/ It cost me $29.95 to buy, and is $14.95 a month from now on, BUT looking at it backwards, You can spend $15/mo - $25/mo just for an Identity Theft Insurance Policy, and this $25k IT policy includes Security program with ity. Their phone support is free, Mon-Fri, 8:00am - 8:00pm MST, Sat, 9:00am - 3:00pm MST, but does involve a phone charge to Utah - MST.

For a couple minor problems I've had so far, it was a very quick 2 -3 minute phone call, adding a bit to their website address allowing them online access to my computer, then I watched the arrow move around on my monitor while they fixed the problems quickly, and the called me back to finalize the service session. HEY, You're a guru like Irwin, you don't need this kind of help, but for us who are not so sure....... They even have a program where you can help sell the program and reduce your monthly cost, but to prove my honesty intent, I am NOT telling you how. FWIW Even if you don't buy and use it, you can learn a lot about security at their site http://www.invisus.com/

OK, so what is YOUR best suggestion for total internet and personal security?
